I would suggest using a Process workflow diagram as one of the first building blocks in the EPM application design. It is super important and useful to outline the whole business planning process end-to-end prior to engaging in any development.
Below is an example of such a diagram for a distributed engineering organization. Business teams involved in the planning cycle are displayed on the left. The diagram documents the interaction between teams/departments. It also shows which input forms, reports, and processes are used at which point in time to produce a consolidated business planning view for the Group.
Designing a process flow diagram is not only useful for a better understanding and documentation of the EPM processes. It is extremely helpful for evaluating the expected project workload, scope of work, deliverables, and overall EPM project planning.
